Trade On-Boarding

Note: According to Universal Orlando's Online Sharing Policy, I as a Team Member cannot share "...Any non-public, confidential proprietary information, such as trade secrets, inventions, strategies, development of attractions, shows and/or characters, financial information, products, pricing, know-how and technology..." including "...video or photographs of such non-public, confidential segments of our business taken behind the scenes." (Univeral Orlando Resort Team Member Handbook, page 26). I could not share any actual copies of projects from my internship. However, I have included brief descriptions and "outlines" to show a glimpse of what I worked on as an intern.

In my position, I was tasked with creating most of the training material for new technicians at Universal Orlando. They would use these materials as a part of their onboarding process and be better accustomed to working to the unique landscape of Universal Orlando.

Below is each individual project I worked on during my time as an intern.

Trade Specific Welcome Letters

The Welcome Letters are customized by trade; they contain the tech's name, training schedule, directions to their trade's shop, and leader's contact information.

The Welcome Letters were created in Word, and all elements (map, text boxes, text) were inserted by me.

The following trades had one created for their new hires:

  • Crafts, Mill Shop, Maintenance, Paint, Sign Shop, Hardware, ECS/BMS, HVAC, Plumbing, and Electric

Facilities/Utilities On-Boarding GOP

The Facilities/Utilities On-Boarding GOP is an overview of all information technicians in both departments would need to know. It includes information such as navigating Universal Orlando's intranet programs, important locations, permitting procedures, and hazardous material handling.

The Facilities/Utilities On-Boarding GOP was created in Word, and all elements (map, text boxes, text, photos) were inserted by me. To retrieve the information, I would meet with managers and specialized departments.

Trade Specific On-Boarding SOPs

The Trade Specific On-Boarding SOPs are a series of SOP explaining trade-specific information technicians must know before starting work. They include information such as tribal trade knowledge, storage locations, safety procedures, and Universal-specific operating procedures.

The Trade Specific On-Boarding SOPs were created in Word, and all elements (map, text boxes, text, photos) were inserted by me. To retrieve the information, I would meet with managers, leads, and supervisors.

The following trades had one written for their new hires:

  • Paint, Maintenance, ECS, HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical

Scavenger Hunts

As an effort to make learning a new technician's way around such a large property more enjoyable, I helped to create trade-specific scavenger hunts. Each hunt has about 10-15 different locations based off of units that are either hard to find, important to know, or most serviced.

The Scavenger Hunts were created in InDesign, and all elements (map, text boxes, text, photos) were inserted by me. I took all photos of the locations and met with technicians to find the locations.

The following trades had one created for their new hires:

  • Electrical (CityWalk, Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios Florida, and Volcano Bay), Plumbing, ECS, and HVAC

Building Name Reference Cards

Universal Orlando has hundreds of different buildings on their property. When technicians receive a work order call, it is often distinguished by the building number versus the venue's name. As this can be confusing at times, I was tasked with creating an easy-to-understand, portable guide that allows technicians to see building numbers and the corresponding venue.

The Building Name Reference Cards were created in Excel, and I formatted the cards and inserted the building information. To retrieve the information, I researched original and current sitemaps.

Maximo Basics SOP

Universal Orlando uses a computer program called Maximo to distribute work orders to technicians. I was tasked with creating a step-by-step SOP showing new technicians and leadership on how to navigate this program.

The Maximo Basics SOP was created in Word, and I inserted screenshots of the Maximo interface and corresponding text myself.

New Team Member Training Checklists

The New Team Member Training Checklists are customized by trade, and outline what supplies and training guides new hires must receive before officially starting work.

The New Team Member Training Checklists were made in Word, and I inserted information into a pre-set format. I did make a few modifications to include more sections to the checklists. I collected information on what new hires need from managers.

The following trades had one created for their new hires:

  • Crafts, Mill Shop, Maintenance, Paint, Sign Shop, Hardware, ECS/BMS, HVAC, Plumbing, and Electric.

New Team Member Training Outline

The New Team Member Training Outlines are customized by trade and outline what material is supposed to be covered by the trainer. The outline takes all of the training material I created and puts it into a timeline of where certain topics are supposed to be covered.

The New Team Member Training Outlines were made in Word, and I created the timeline based off of previous training material I created and where it could best fit time permitting.

The following trades had one created for their new hires:

  • HVAC, Electrical
